This Saturday, March 8th (aka 8M) join us for the Women's Strike NYC Fest, an afternoon of speeches, participatory feminist art and tabling in Maria Hernandez Park, from 12-4 PM. For the 9th year in a row, we are taking to the streets of NYC in synchrony with compas marching, rallying, and picketing in cities and towns across the continent and the world. This year, we willjoin under the cry: When Immigrant Women Stop, the World Stops with Us. During the festival, we will be uplifting local/ translocal struggles and demands at the intersection of class, immigration and gender. NARCAN is a medicine that rapidly reverses opioid overdose by restoring oxygen to the brain. In New York City, a person dies from an opioid overdose every three hours, totaling 2,920 deaths per year. Climate change will lead to increased social and economic challenges, disproportionately affecting individuals who use drugs and potentially leading to life-threatening health outcomes. Rising temperatures heighten the risk of overdose, making climate change and the opioid crisis interconnected issues. Many of these deaths are preventable through harm-reduction strategies such as NARCAN. We're trying to bring climate week back to where it belongs, in community, where the solutions to climate change are born. They are now sneaking in a Zoom information session on Monday, August 12th, at 6;30pm with only ten days' notice, no real community outreach & when many residents are away for the Summer! We believe all these things are intentional, strategic and have plagued every aspect of this process thus far. From the hastily put together task force, that as of yet includes no local representation of the Columbia Waterfront Distrtict, to the fact that even the website omits any mention of piers 9a & 9b, our piers here on the Columbia St. Waterfront. For these reasons, it's becoming increasingly hard to trust this process. Slide 2 Family: Asteraceae Symphyotrichum novi-belgii Common name: New York Aster Asters, native perennials, bloom from late summer to fall, offering pollinators sustenance in the months leading up to winter. While they thrive in full sun, Asters display adaptability to different environments, being found in moist meadows or woodland edges. These plants spread quickly through rhizomes, with some species displaying aggressive growth to outcompete invasive plants. Slide 3 The New York Asters are famous for their vibrant shades of purple and yellow. In Native American tribes, historical accounts show that the Cherokee utilized different plant parts for diverse medicinal uses. They make a poultice from the roots to relieve pain and prepare an infusion for treating diarrhea and fever. They inhale the root’s essence to manage catarrh, a condition marked by mucus accumulation in the nasal passages, throat, or sinuses, causing irritation and discomfort. Slide 4 The flower nectar of the New York Aster attracts bees, hoverflies, and migrating Monarch butterflies, making kin* a vital nectar source for native pollinators. The Pearl Crescent (Phyciodes tharos) caterpillars use this plant as a host, with multiple broods appearing from April to November in the north and year-round in the deep south and Mexico. When laying eggs, female Pearl Crescents are meticulous, stacking small white eggs in organized clusters on the upper surface of an aster leaf. Wild Columbine: Aquilegia canadensis Wild Columbine tolerates a variety of soils but prefers moist and well-draining. It thrives in partial shade, but it does well in full sun if the soil is moist enough. It is a favorite of hummingbirds, particularly Ruby Hummingbirds and long-tongued pollinators. Showy Goldenrod: Solidago speciosa Goldenrod patches thrive in partial shade with moist rocky or clay soils. They support butterflies like the painted lady, monarch, and viceroy and continue to bloom into the fall. Goldenrod is medicinal and edible. White Snakeroot: Ageratina altissima White Snakeroot is a fall bloom that provides pollinators with a food source late in the year. It can tolerate a variety of conditions and is often found in Brooklyn construction sites, abandoned lots, and other tough-to-grow environments. 🌧️🌧️ watering ⏰ 🌧️🌧️ With spring rolling around strong, it is important to remember to hydrate ourselves and our plants more regularly. Some tips for watering 🪴 check your pot to see if its lighter. You can also lightly dip your finger (not too deep!) to check if the soil is dry. 🛁 You can completely soak your plant with water. Uneven watering can cause problems, so it’s important that water is distributed well. Bottom watering is an often popular method so your plant soaks up the water it needs, and your pot won’t leak water all over the place like top watering does. Having a catching tray also an option if you prefer top watering. Completely soaking your plant would mean slower drying out between watering periods as it takes longer to dry out. 🌴 Watering and watering cycles also depends on your plant types. The ones you see are a a mix of herbs and one ivy plant. Herbs do like being watered more frequently than plants such as ZZs and succulents. They also enjoy the ☀️ and can tolerate higher lights. 🥀 Drooping is also a good tell on when your plants need to be watered. I recently repotted these babies, so they definetely needed moistened soil. Some plants also curl inwards. Always check the soil and weight of your plant before watering! It can be difficult to figure out what your plant needs, especially with so many variables such as sun, pests, and pot size. 🪴Quick Dieffenbachia baby repots! 🪴 🏺I separated two babies from the mother during a repot! Grabbing a pot a few inches bigger than the roots, with enough room for soil to stabilize your plant. 🌍 Well mixed soil : ▪️perlite (drainage) ▪️potting mix (nutrients, base for potting plants) ▪️charcoal (great for bacterial control at roots, increases oxygen levels) ▪️orchid bark (drainage) 🌊 If the soil is dry, it is important to water thoroughly as your plant most likely experienced some shock (especially to the roots). There are different techniques to repotting, such as watering a few days before repotting to minimize shock. 🌞Now place your plant in an area with bright indirect light (avoid very direct light as this can scorch the leaves easily). Plants can also adapt to lower light settings, but this would also mean longer periods between watering since drying soil will take longer! Maybe you’ll catch one of these babies at one of our events! Have fun and experiment a little! 🪴Hehe I get so excited for PX events because I get to make these cute lil potting vids! 🌱🪴 🌎I always start with mixing a well-drained soil with perlite, potting mix, orchid bark, and some leca! You can also add a lil planting charcoal which helps a lot with roots! 💚🤎 💚🍃Making sure your propagations have strong long roots before potting is essential. Strong root system helps with nutrient absorption. Plants such as pothos however can also be soil propped, but I always start with water propagation . ♻️While my lil upcycled jar does not have drainage holes, I make sure to be careful with watering. You want to make sure that the soil is dry before the next watering cycle, and not get carried away with watering. Well moistened soil is ideal. Too soggy soil with lots of puddled water can lead to root rotting. ☺️The most important part is to have fun! Propagating and planting is supposed to be a learning experience and destressor. It took me some time to learn how to keep my area cleaner (I always end up with soil all over my floor 😅) by moistening the soil prior to potting my propagations. Its up to you, and what works best for you. Get your hands dirty! It’s just EARTH! We got this lovely donation from the lovely Stephen and Matt! Here’s how you can repot and share some big “zz” plants. Zz stands for Zamioculcas zamiifolia. With repotting some things to consider : 1. Make sure the roots are healthy! You should take off mushy or very dried-up roots. Luckily, the plants we received were very healthy. 2. Grab a pot about an inch larger than the original pot.  Too small of a pot can lead to root bounding, loss of leaves, and drying out fast. You have to give roots and plants enough space to keep growing. Repotting your plants frequently causes stress.  4. Drainage: Drainage is essential! Using containers with no drainage holes at the bottom is not recommended for people with a tendency to overwater.  3. Soil composition: Learn where the ZZ plant origins are. They grow in Eastern Africa in dry grasslands. They will not appreciate sitting in water. High ratio of amendments to potting mix. (Perlite or whatever you prefer) Growing in pon or leca is possible and shows excellent results for some.  4. Watering: Make sure to water after repotting. Plants can be so dramatic sometimes. All this mini white needed was some water! She’s okay! Like I said : Dramatic. However, drooping in plants can be a good indicator for when your plants are ready for their next watering! You can also check by dipping your finger about an inch or two into the soil. A finger with wet soil sticking to it is indication that your plant doesn’t need to be watered. If you see a little dry soil sticking to your finger, then it might be time to water! Plants such as cacti, succulent, and Hoyas can go longer without watering. My baby rubber plant or #peperomiaobtusifolia marble flowered and I just noticed! It's such a funny plant. Does anyones plants flower in the winter like crazy? My begonias and cacti are also having a great time right now. She's growing in leca getting direct sunlight for most of the day until the late afternoon it becomes medium. To keep them from reverting have them in direct light. She's under direct light half the day then medium light the other half.
